This is the 6th Annual In The Face of an Angel Golf for Ovarian Cancer and we are almost ready to hit those links! Registrations are coming in daily and I see our last years Winners are coming back to defend their title! Althea, Debbie, Eudora and Cindy are dusting off their clubs and Eudora has probably got the jump on all of us by playing while on vacation in sunny Florida!
Our tournament is being held this year at the beautiful Newcastle Golf & Country Club and Ev is busy preparing things for us to hit the links for a tee off at 1 PM. Dee’s Catering will be bringing a hearty menu once again and one thing for sure is no matter how we play the beautiful meal Dee does for us is heavenly and a great way to end the day!
There will be a silent auction table with great new items added this year and remember all proceeds go to Ovarian Cancer Canada for their Research and Outreach Programs. As you know we have given them over $50,000 in the last 5 years which everyone is thrilled with so even tho it is costing us more to host it this year we have still set our goal at $10,000 and I know you will all help us reach that goal.
I have upgraded my clubs this year at Dan’s Custom Clubs in Hampton and am looking for a much more comfortable game after my surgery this winter…This tournament is my springboard for the others I enter this summer raising funds for all the other causes I play in support of so I can only get better. 🙂
So ladies, round up your teammates to play, your family, neighbours and friends to donate online let’s send Ovarian Cancer Canada the biggest donation we have yet!
I will be updating and blogging routinely up to and including the tournament so watch for them. Sign up for this for free and stay updated with the days events. You will be glad you did!
Until next time…
Well today I finally met with Avery and Ashleigh of Ovarian Cancer Canada to finally finalize our 2015 “In The Face of an Angel” Golf for Ovarian Cancer Tournament held at Ayren Links Golf Course and I was able to present them a cheque from the tournament for $8,150. I am sure they must have been thinking we would never be able to catch up with each other, but how fantastic it was to be able to give them another wonderful donation from this little tournament. When we added in the online donations of $1,050 PLUS the offline donations of $1,195 the grand total this tournament made for Ovarian Cancer Canada was $10,395 ! There were high fives all around! I know Avery was elated, as today was her last day with this Ovarian Cancer Canada group because she was heading to Whitehorse to finally meet up with her hubby! What a great guy he must be to have put up with such a long time in this long distance relationship as newly weds! The sacrifices they make for Cause! The people of Whitehorse don’t realize what a cracker jack volunteer they are getting in Avery but it won’t be long until they do!
Special thanks to our fantastic caterer, Dee’s Harvest Table, to sponsors The Castle Cellar, Archibald’s Orchards, Ayren Links, Municipal of Clarington Social Committee, Veridian, Algoma Orchards, The Old Newcastle House, Covanta, Brightstar Newcastle Group, Palmieri’s No Frills, Ivan B Wallace OLS, Gay Construction, Kaitlin Group, Shoppers Drug Mart Newcastle, Syvan Developments, St. Mary’s Cement, Walsh’s SNUG, Newcastle Recycling Ltd.Without you we could not begin to do what we do for Ovarian Cancer Canada!
A special thank you too, to all the businesses that contributed Silent Auction items… as a successful Silent Auction is truly where we have the most fun raising these funds! Thanks again to all of you special people! Way to many to name here but lets just say that many small businesses in our little communities truly show just how generous they are for the Cause and why I love to call this area my home!
A personal THANK YOU to the volunteers that come out no matter what the weather is (and Lord knows this year was like golfing in November, not May!) it goes without saying how invaluable you all are to me and the success of this tournament.
Our cumulative total for our short 5 years doing this is now over $50,000
Ovarian Cancer Canada has advised me they will now keep the “donation page” open for us to be able to donate through the year so if you want to donate when someone passes away for example, you will be able to go to our website, http://www.inthefaceofanangel.ca and donate through their secure page that is linked to this and donate without any concerns. You will also be able to take advantage and donate using your visa/mc or amex on a monthly plan if it is easier for you. Along with all the other options, you can’t beat that option now can you!?
I am humbled by your continued generosity. The true winner in all of this is Ovarian Cancer Canada and the Outreach and Research programs they are able to provide with this funding to the hundreds of women in need of this support in our communities.
Rain, Sleet, Snow, or Hail does not deter the women who continue to golf in this tournament! Each and every one of them are troopers who play not only for the love of the game but for the Cause. Thank You Ladies for another super year and as you prepare to put your clubs away for this season, think back and remember it was each and every one of you who helped achieve this remarkable goal and for that I am forever grateful. See you May 29th, 2016 for our 6th “In The Face of an Angel” Golf for Ovarian Cancer Tournament! Save the date, won’t you?
Well Ladies we have done it again! The 5th Annual In The Face of an Angel has had another successful year! We have hit the $8,000 mark and I hope that the online donations will continue to come in. Thank you to all who have donated, sponsored and played in this great little tournament in memory of my Mom, Bernice. Mom would be so proud to see this tournament building every year and all proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Canada for the Research and Outreach as they are doing. Ovarian Cancer Canada tells me, we are the little tournament that could and has come through for them every year!
I want to thank the Municipality of Clarington’s Social Committee, Veridian, Algoma Orchards, The Old Newcastle House, Janice Parish-Royal Service, Covanta, Brightstar Newcastle Group, Palmieri’s No Frills, IBW Surveyors Inc.,Gay Construction, Kaitlin Corporation, Shoppers Drug Mart-Newcastle, Syvan Developments, St. Mary’s Cement, Walsh’s SNUG, Dee’s Harvest Table, The Castle Cellar, Tim Horton’s Orono/Newcastle, Ann Harley, Ron Hooper and of course I can’t forget those who donated to the silent auction table with the great items we had there and the great prizes! Those generous people include Bill Bath Painting, Shelley Rivers-Regal, East Oshawa Animal Hospital, Jen Cooke, Mill Valley Trophies-Cobourg, Boots&Hearts, Tara Watchorn, Archibald Winery, The Hamptons, Karen Ellis-Inspirational Designs, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Bowmanville Veterinary Clinic, Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, Stutts Pharmacy, Dr. K. For without you this tournament would not exist! Thank you does not seem like it will ever be enough!
Surprising to me was our pair of BOOTS&HEARTS tickets for the Country Show coming up in August this year did not sell so we decided to put them out there for a bid from the public with all monies going directly to Ovarian Cancer Canada. This was a value of $598.00 and through the efforts of a great friend they sold for $450! Everyone wins! Ovarian Cancer and Kelli Ann Edgar and Michael Holmes who I am sure will really have a blast! Thank you Kelli Ann and Michael!!
The weather this year was rough to say the least! It was cold and drizzly like an early November day as the pix will show…the ladies were troopers though and of the 46 signed to play, 39 ended up golfing…those were the hearty ones, the real troopers! Moe and Betty, owners of Ayren Links Golf were real sports as Moe took over the putting contest spot when Councillor Woo had to leave for another event and Councillor Hooper stood out in the rain while the ladies, protected under their golf carts competed in the chipping contest. What a trooper Ron is! Even giving them pointers to help them out.
Volunteers! Wow what can I say about my volunteers? Donna Metcalf Woo on the registration table had a few glitches but sorted the golfers out and everyone got off to a great start..coffee and Tim Bit in hand!
Karin Cashin on the refreshment station cut up all our snacks, like a good Mom would, so we could grab and go as she provided our water along with fruit, two-bite brownies and fruit loaf spending her time outside altho under the patio, I am sure she was still cold!
Lisa Roy, our photographer, bombed around in a golf cart, taking pictures of the ladies at every turn. I bet she wished she had had windshield wipers on that cart she was driving! We’ve got some good shots in spite of the weather too!
Back at Archibald’s Winery, where Fred and Sandy Archibald were so generous to donate their facility for the “after golfing” event, were Sandy, Pat, Kris, Donna, Lisa, Sandy and Fred were busy setting up the silent auction items and the tables for the meal while Dee’s Harvest Table were busy setting up the food for the cold and hungry ladies as they came in to continue the festivities. Once again, Dee’s hot buffet was a knock out! Fantastic food and unbelievable dessert! Thanks to Diana and her team!
A special Thank You to Vicki Cowle, who stayed to help us do the clean up and after a long day that extra pair of hands was worth more than we can ever say! Thanks Vicki!
All in all it was a great day! We raised so far just over $8,000 with a couple of outstanding items I am still hoping to sell. I have a load of Grade A Gravel from Dufferin Aggregates that they will deliver anywhere in Clarington that would be great for someones driveway or to fill in where you need it in your existing driveway. It is worth $600 so a good bid and it will be yours!
And to the winning team who this year were Althea Chaffey, Cindy Dekking, Eudora Nesbitt and Debbie Dunham with a best ball score or 34…great job ladies! I’ll do my best to get the trophies engraved and to you before we tee off next year! I promise!
Avery Morris joined us from Ovarian Cancer Canada for the meal and prize presentations before she had to head back to Toronto to tell everyone back at “headquarters” just how great our “In The Face of an Angel” Golf for Ovarian Cancer Tournament is! Avery, thanks for coming and we hope you enjoyed your time with us! Hope we see you back next year!
The Online Donations will be left open through the website and monitored by Ovarian Cancer Canada so please feel free to have your friends, family and neighbours donate online. Wouldn’t it be great if we could close out the year with a $10,000 donation!
So ladies, thank you once again for being there! You are really true friends and troopers to have come and played in what was definitely not our best year for weather. Mother Nature’s wrath did not deter us, for we are a group that is undeterable! Hope to see you May 29, 2016!
I just wanted to once again say THANK YOU!! to all of you who braved the elements and hung in there to play in our 5th Annual In The Face of an Angel Golf for Ovarian Cancer Tournament! You truly are troopers who play for the CAUSE!
I have to say how upset I was when I realized I had not thanked my good friend, Jackie Foxall of The Castle Cellar, Newcastle for donating the lunch wine for all you ladies to enjoy! Once again, Jackie goes to the wall for our tournament and does so without hesitation. I really don’t even need to ask her to help, she just does…Jackie is just one of those amazing ladies! We are so glad she is so dedicated to this CAUSE and we have her on our TEAM! If you get a chance to go into The Castle Cellar stop by and say hi to Jackie, she always has the time to chat with you no matter how busy she might be!
Today was an awesome day! Yes, it was cold and rainy and the true winners of the day were Ovarian Cancer Canada! Ovarian Cancer Canada has no government funding for its work and relies heavily on people like you and me to do our part raising funds for their Research and Outreach Programs. Avery Morris, one of Ovarian Cancers 2 Fundraising Chair persons in all of Canada, came to show their gratitude and to meet one of the greatest fundraising teams they have raising money for them. Something we can’t stop doing until their really is a cure for Ovarian Cancer. Ovarian Cancer Canada would like to start an outreach support group right here in Clarington as there is none at the moment and one is needed desperately. I would like to help with getting this off the ground for them to move forward with this much needed group!
Avery was impressed by how committed all the ladies that were there today were to this cause and for that I thank all of you once again! I only hope that this years weather did not put anyone off for raising much needed awareness and funds for next year! Yes, there is going to be a next year and I am committed to raising even more funds.
After this year, and having to change venues to Ayren Links Golf, we have different challenges to overcome but Moe and Betty are willing to work with us and help make this even more successful next year so I am sure we can work out the “kinks” and make that happen…I just hope we can count on you to return and maybe even bring your friends. Not many courses will close to other business in order to have a tournament take place on a Sunday, but Moe and Betty did just that and for Charity are willing to take us on again. Keep it in mind…you’ll be hearing more from me as we get closer but remember this…the 6th Annual In The Face of an Angel Golf for Ovarian Cancer will take place in 2016 somewhere in Clarington on MAY 29th and that is the actual date my Mom passes away on what will be her 8th anniversary.
Sandy and Fred Archibald of Archibald’s Estate Winery have offered to let us come back to their location to have our dinner, silent auction and wind up once again…it can’t get much better than that!
The online donation key will remain active and in place on our site so if you can pass the word to everyone you know to donate even a few dollars 2015 could be a banner year for us all involved with the 5th Annual In The Face of an Angel. Can you help make that happen by telling everyone to go to http://inthefaceofanangel.ca and making that donation? Challenge your work colleagues, your family and friends and see who can “beat” who…I dare you!
I will be posting the pictures and updating from this years tournament in a couple of days, once we have worked out all the details, for all of you to enjoy and maybe even chuckle over the antics of your team and others.
Stay tuned…and thanks again for a wonderful day!
Until next time…..
Hi again every one!
Tonight at 9 pm is the 7th anniversary of my Mom’s death from this dreaded #1 silent killer of women’s cancers. Please get tested…do not put it off…there are virtually no symptoms so as part of your annual check up insist your doctor tests you for it. It may or may not show up but do your due diligence….we lose too many to this what they call Ovarian Cancer!
Just days to go to the 5th Annual In The Face of an Angel Golf for Ovarian Cancer Tournament! Everything is coming together nicely and donations for our silent auction are wonderful items everyone should be pleased to bid on! We even have a lunch donated at Queens Park with our MPP Granville Anderson! How cool is that? Some of you are donating online at our secure donation site http://inthefaceofanangel.ca and that is appreciated and needed very badly. Let’s make this 5th Annual In The Face of an Angel Golf for Ovarian Cancer Research and Outreach Programs a record year! Please help me do that…Donate NOW! No amount is too small…
I was over to see Moe today to check how things were moving along and the course is looking lovely. They’ve done a lot of work in a few short weeks…We ought to have a great time even if it is going to be cooler…dress warm…we will all be riding a cart you know :>
So I will keep you updated on where we are at every day so make sure you check it out…
Have a wonderful day!
Hello again…We just got back from Ayren Links golf course and going over the final details with Moe and Betty. Betty let me know in no uncertain terms that there is a dress code on this course and will be in force on the day of the tournament. I wish I had been told sooner and I would have sent it all with the golf package! I don’t like surprises….
Here are the details for everyone…please be sure to dress accordingly…I’d hate to have anyone asked to leave because they did not dress appropriately. I am sure this group dresses appropriately all the time so I am expecting no issues to have to deal with anyway…here are the requirements….
Golf Skirts-Knee Length
Shorts with minimum inseam
Full Shirts-if sleeveless must have a collar
Sandals or Golf Sandals

Wow …we’re sure getting some interesting Silent Auction items once again! Along with the 4 General Admission Tickets for Boots and Hearts, this year being held at Burls Creek…we’ve now just got a load of Granular A gravel from Dufferin/Holcim Aggregates! Great for repair in your driveway!! It’s a $500 value so get your thinking caps on and decide who wants it and where will you need to put it?? Any on us who live in the country could certainly use a good load of Granular A…it becomes a hot commodity this time of year for driveway repair due to damage over the long harsh winter we just had…
East Oshawa Animal Hospital has donated 2 gift baskets, one for a dog and one for a cat! Each basket is worth approx $90 of toys, treats and food!
Mill Valley Trophies of Cobourg has donated a golf shirt, visor, we have A SIGNED mounted photo of Olympic Gold Medalist, Tara Watchorn when she scored the winning goal vs Sweden!

If you or your company would like to donate a silent auction item, let me know…I’d be happy to come get it from you…these items really help us raise funds for Ovarian Cancer and since May 8 is World Ovarian Cancer Day, it is a great time to make that commitment to the Cause.
I hope you are all out there on the driving range getting the creaks out of your joints and warming up your clubs…it will be a fun day and we have a special guest coming to check out our tournament from Ovarian Cancer this year…Avery is Ovarian Cancer Canada’s fundraising Queen so I hope she will see all the good things going on with this tournament and be as proud of it as I am!
So ladies…it looks like we will have a great day for this tournament if you believe the long range forecast for May…Cross your fingers! Rain or Shine we are bound to have a fun time raising money for Ovarian Cancer again this year! See you on the course!

I’d like to thank those businesses who have come to help already as Sponsorship’s and Hole Sponsors are coming in and we are gathering silent auction items from local businesses and Corporations as we speak. If you or your business feel would like to donate or be a part of this great cause, please let me know. I would appreciate all the participation we can muster. It is a great cause and one that needs all the exposure it can get.
Let’s face it, without the help of our business community, tournaments like this would be in jeopardy. Hats off to all of you!
If you know people who would like to donate to this tournament send them to my website at http://www.inthefaceofanangel.ca and they can follow the links to donate online. It’s easy, it is secure as it is set up by Ovarian Cancer Canada and linked with my site.
